Why DO the Japanese Have the Longest Lifespan? Part 2: Live the Lifestyle

Why do the Japanese have the longest lifespan? Last month you learned to eat the things Japanese people eat, and now you will learn how to live like they live. Fast, long, and lively best describes a usual day in Japan. The country is geared towards an active lifestyle, as the ‘couch potato’ concept is completely foreign. This lively lifestyle centers around three key aspects: work, socializing and recreation.

The workday begins early due to the commute by train that most people endure. This can range from 20 minutes to over two hours with the majority of people standing, as there are not enough seats. Walking is the focal point in the daily exercise regime. On average, people walk one to two kilometers to the train station in the morning. After arriving at the closest station to their office, people typically walk another one to two kilometers to their place of business. At the end of their long day, workers go through the same routine. All in all, the average Japanese individual will walk between three to five kilometers per day. Interestingly enough, these walks generally occur immediately or soon after meals, which helps with the digestive process.

Socializing is also different than that for western culture. As homes and apartments in Japan are considerably smaller, people opt to entertain outside of their home. This is one of the primary reasons clubs; hobbies and leisure activities play such an important role in the culture. In fact it is very uncommon to have dinner parties or get-togethers in Japanese homes. A popular alternative is to meet at public establishments for events and parties.

Automobiles do have some purpose, however they are viewed as a hobby or a luxury. Parking in Japan is costly and limited with simply not enough parking spaces for everyone to park. Cars are used for longer excursions to other cities or the countryside. The most common recreational activities are active ones. Trips to the mountains, lakes or open spaces are most popular.

Although the pace of life is fast in Japan, we can learn from certain aspects. Changing our eating habits is an important first step and combining low impact exercise after eating, such as walking, will have a greater impact. Involvement in clubs or activities that are active will also create an opportunity to engage in activity. Finally, being less reliant on our vehicles will require more effort for some daily physical activity.

So perhaps if you do what they do and eat what they eat you could be extending your lifespan. Your life is what you make it.

Here’s to your health!

Japanese Garden of Monaco

Have you ever seen an authentic Japanese garden? Well, I had the chance of seeing the one in Monaco and was really impressed too. Wanna taste a little Japanese culture? Stepping on this ground is escaping from the real world into a fantasy land. You suddenly find yourself in a typical Japanese natural setting like the ones you see in marvelous paintings. The only thing that's missing is the fog. Instead, the Mediterranean sun reveals all minute details in a warm light.

With Japanese gardens, what you see is not all; the surface of things is the mere reflection of the psyche of an ancient culture. One really needs to be literally "cultured" in this direction to best appreciate the value of this art. (which I myself was not at the time of my visit! And it was a pitty as I did not know what to look for and what to analyse better!) One can speak of a philosophy of gardening coming from the ancient Japan. Japanese gardening is an art fetched beyond the arrangements of vegetation, water and stone but is full of symbols:

  • Koko - the veneration of timeless age;
  • Shizen - the avoidance of the artificial;
  • Yugen, or darkness - imply the mysterious or subtle;
  • Miegakure - the avoidance of full expression

The perception of nature is different in the Japanese culture from that of the European one. Instead of viewing nature only as something to be subjugated and transformed according to men-made ideal of beauty, Japanese developed a close connection to nature, considering it sacred, an ally in putting food on the table and an ideal of beauty in itself. That is why the Japanese gardens are the synthesis of nature in miniature instead of correction of nature as with European gardens.

Actually, the design of Japanese gardens come from the Chinese model. The history goes back in time, around year 100BC when the emperor of China, Wu Di of the Han Dynasty established a garden that contained three small islands, mimicking the Isles of the Immortals, who were the principle Taoist deities. An envoy of Japan saw it and took the idea to Japan, improving the existing Japanese practices.

The Japanese Garden of Monaco was designed at the request of Prince Rainier who thus fulfilled a desire Princesse Grace had expressed during her life-time. The garden was designed by the landscape-architect Yasuo Beppu, has 7,000 square meter, its construction took 3 years and it was inaugurated in 1994.

There are some specific elements:

  • The wall (Heï) with an intermediary bamboo fencing (Takégaki) that stands for fragility and simplicity.
  • The main gate (Shô-mon)
  • The stone lanterns (Tôrô) - each having special different characteristics;
  • The lake (Iké) with large swishing gold fish.
  • The stone fountain (Fusen-Ishi)
  • The covered terrace (Kyukeïjo)
  • The islands (Shima) - represent two long-living animals - the tortoise and the crane, symbols of complementarity expressed
  • The Tea house (Chatshitsu)- named the Garden of Grace (Ga-én)
  • The dry landscape (Karésansui) - quintessence of Cosmos
  • The Belvedere (Azumaya) - a house on a hill allowing view in all four corners
  • The waterfall (Taki) - symbolizes the strength of Man and Nature, contrasting to the horizontality of the lake.
  • The arched red bridge (Taïkobashi) - is red, the color of happiness and is narrow so as to make access to the divine island more difficult.

There are olive trees, cherry trees, conifers, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias, a varried, rich vegetation of Mediterranean, South American, Australia, African and Asian origin, pruned according to the Japanese tradition.

Walking in the crowded Monaco, with all its stone, steel and glass, you can find in the Japanese Garden a peaceful, green oasis where even the great number of tourists passes unnoticed, wandering on the winding paths, through the thicket of the garden.

The most important thing to consider when spending your holidays abroad is the budget. Even if you are tempted to spend endless amount of money, you just don’t want to end up bankrupt. So here are some great and effective tips on how you can keep your budget but still have a great time.

Cheap Holiday Packages the moment you plan for your holiday vacation, you can already save some money if you find a cheap holiday package. This has become a trend for the travelers today. One package for a whole holiday trip. This is cheaper because some hotels, airlines and travel operators team up to come up with a cheap package. Extra Luggage Space be sure to leave some extra space in your luggage because you will need it when you come back after shopping.

Bring Fewer Clothes this is just the best way to minimize your luggage. Take only the most sensible ones from shoes, jeans, to tee shirts. For example, if you’re going to the beach, you may no longer need to bring some shoes, just slippers or light shoes will do. To even minimize it more, doubling your clothes will be helpful use your swim shorts as sleep wear.

Plastic Bags this would be very useful because you can put your dirty laundry here and separate them with the clean ones in your luggage. Leaving some ready stock of clothes for you during your trip.

Wise Shopping some souvenir shops can be overpricing due to the number of tourists coming in the place. Before you buy the things you see that you really like, takesome walk into various shops first and you may see other things that you would need to buy. It would be advisable to buy first the ones that you really need and buy the extra ones later on. This would help you cut down the instinct of buying an item the moment you see it. Because there are times that we’ll see a more beautiful one or a cheaper one.

In this time of economic recession, more and more people take budget trips during the holiday. Some even decide not to travel anymore. A Different Approach to Instrument Flight Training

Any licensed private pilot who has tried to earn their instrument rating knows that traditional instrument flight training can be slow, frustrating and unnecessarily redundant. Medford, Oregon based Certified Flight Instructor Field Morey realized long ago that he needed to get his instrument students away from the distractions of day to day life so they could focus on the process of learning IFR mastery.

To separate life from flight training, Morey takes two students at a time on what he calls West Coast Adventure Flights spanning six days flying throughout the American West. He has used this technique to teach instrument flying for over 40 years, with over 600 pilots building hours towards their IFR rating while seeing the Western United States from inside Morey’s 2008 Cessna T182T Skylane aircraft.

Morey offers three different IFR adventure flights:

The Alaska Adventure is an incredible area to spend a week of flight training while enjoying the majestic scenery and grandeur of the great America wilderness. On this once in a lifetime trip, is as important as the six days of IFR flight training you’ll receive, much if it in the kind of real world IMC that is found in Alaska.

After departure from Medford, IFR flight students cross over into Canada and clear Canadian customs using CANPASS. The flight then travels north along the British Columbia coastline, and after clearing U.S. Customs at Ketchikan, the trip has planned stops at Anchorage, Sitka,Yakutat, Cordova, Juneau, and other points of interest. If weather allows, students may also see Mt. McKinley (Denali).

For pilots seeking to learn backcountry flying and operations, Morey offers the Wilderness Adventure Flight, a six day flight designed as an instrument refresher as well as a chance to learn the skills for operating in the Idaho backcountry.

The course begins in Medford with two flight students and Morey traveling north into Washington, Idaho and Montana to learn the ins and outs of operations from mountain strips as well as canyon techniques. On this adventure, pilots get time to hike, fish or just relax and enjoy the solitude of the Idaho Wilderness.

Pilot and flight student Blake Picquet of Fort Worth, TX was one of Morey’s students on this adventure a few years ago. Never will you find another opportunity to combine a legendary instructor with the panoramic views and intensity of the Idaho backcountry. The result is a trip that will put all your skills to the test...commercial, instrument, and of course, fly fishing, Picquet said.

Morey also offers the Rockies Adventure Flight, a six day training session that combines IFR mountain techniques with beautiful scenery from the Rockies and American Southwest. After stops in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Arizona, the training continues in the busy Class Bravo airspace of the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions before arriving back in Medford, Oregon.

One aspect of Morey’s Adventure Flights is the a brand new Cessna 182 Skylane with glass cockpit. The turbocharged Skylane provides the additional performance needed in the mountainous areas along with additional power to climb above the icing conditions during the winter months. The aircraft has a full Garmin G1000 instrument panel and is soon to be equipped with Garmin Synthetic Vision Technology plus TAWS B Terrain and Obstruction Data, GDL 69 Datalink with XM Weather and Radio, and Garmin GFC700 Autopilot, Morey has even outfitted his Skylane with Bose noise canceling headsets to create a quiet training environment.

The training program has proven to be such a success, all trips during Morey’s 2008 training season easily sold out. He has launched a new website that is sure to continue making his West Coast Adventure Flights one of the most popular IFR training programs in the country.

Road Bikes Reviews: The Giro D’italia Is The Italy’s Answer To The Tour De France

The Giro d’Italia has a fine history behind it, like the Tour de France it was started to publicise a newspaper, just like the Tour de France the organisers made the leaders jersey the same colour as the paper, yellow in France from the L’Auto newspaper and pink in Italy from the La Gazzetta dello Sport. The first Giro was in 1909 and was 2448 kilometres long (the shortest), split into 8 stages and was won by the Italian rider Luigi Ganna, 127 riders started in Milan, but by the finish, also in Milan, there was only 49 left, this was not the worst edition, in 1914 only 8 out of the 81 starters managed the full distance.

The winners.

Just like the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, the Giro d’Italia always has a deserving winner, three riders have won it five times, Alfredo Binda and Fausto Coppi of Italy and the great Belgian, Eddy Merckx, Merckx of course also won the Tour de France five times and the Vuelta once. There have been many other “stars” who have won the Giro over the years, French heroes Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault and from Spain Miguel Indurain have all one 5 Tours de France and the Giro more than once. The home riders have obviously been the big winners, Felice Gimondi, Gino Bartoli, Ivan Gotti, Gilberto Simoni and Paolo Savoldelli have all shown there winning ways, but the battles between Giuseppe Saronni and Francesco Moser in the 80’s are epic. The strangest rider to have taken part in the Giro d’Italia would be Alfonsina Morini Strada who is the only woman to have ridden the race, and finish!

The race itself.

The Giro has started outside of Italy on eight occasions, the furthest away being either Belgium, Greece or possibly the Dutch town of Groningen, which hosted the opening individual time trial in 2002. When the race is on Italian soil the main difficulties are usually the Alps, Dolomites and the Apennines, the Giro is in May so the big climbs can get dreadful weather, snow, rain and cold temperatures can shape the race and determine the winner.

The future of the Giro d’Italia.

The future of the Giro d’Italia looks good, since the UCI (cycling’s governing body) brought in the Pro-Tour all the top 20 teams have to ride the race, before they would only get all the Italian teams and a few foreign teams with sponsor interests in Italy, now the race is also shown free on television, where as before it could only be seen on a private station. The 2005 edition was one of the best for years, top teams, top riders and a hard course brought the race to life, for years the Giro had become a procession until the last hour, then the sprinters took over. The climbers had some good hard stages and the team leaders would do there work for the overall on the hills or the time trial, and that was it, now its one of the most exciting stage races there is from begging to end.

Don't Miss These Sights When You Travel To Italy

Italy is a breathtakingly beautiful country that will always be one of the highlights for anyone's travel to Europe. It has everything from the impossibly blue Mediterranean Sea to the spectacular Alps, with fabulous food at every stop along the way. And while you are there, you can't help but trip over history with every step you take. Here are few things you cannot miss when you travel to Italy:

Venice. Think about it. How many movies have you seen that were set in this romantic city? Well there is a reason. If there is a city with more charm and magic than Venice, someone is keeping it a very tight secret. (Oh sure, I can just hear those Parisians objecting that their's is the most romantic city, but those folks are hardly objective. Besides, this is an article about Italy.) The "streets" are waterways and the city is gradually sinking into the Adriatic Sea. But don't worry, it will still be there by the time you get there to see it all.

The Roman Colosseum.Talk about the original home for extreme games. You can almost hear the ghosts of gladiators clashing their swords and signing multi-drachma contracts with their agents. The Colosseum is both a spectacular and grim place, considering the many senseless acts of violence that occurred here. Kind of like the beauty pageants are today.

Florence. If you aren't already an art lover, you will be after visiting Florence. Walk in the footsteps of Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Raphael and your life will be forever changed. One word of warning however, if you are already prone to feelings of penis envy or inadequacy, Michelangelo's 18-foot statue of David, may not be your cup of tea.

The Vatican. The art, architecture, history and sheer aura of this place will leave you speechless. (Well except for breathless comments like, "magnificent," "unbelievable," and "where's the bathroom.")

Wine country. The folks in France won't admit this either, but Italian wines are often every bit as good (sometimes even better) than their French counterparts. Take a tour and you will enjoy the tastings all the more after having seen the sheer craftsmanship and patience that goes into making fine wines. And need I remind you to purchase a few of your favorites so you can bring them home to impress your friends with your refinement and worldly sophistication.

The Italian Alps. OK, I will admit that I kept thinking, "these mountains cannot be real. I bet some Hollywood film company put together the ultimate background to impress the tourists." But in actual fact, they are real. And they are beautiful beyond anything you have ever imagined before in your life. What has always amazed me was that Hannibal surprised the Romans by bringing elephants through the Alps. Elephants were the ancient warfare equivalent of our modern tanks, so you can bet Hannibal had the Romans running for their adult Pampers as soon as they saw his army coming over those mountains.

I read somewhere that Italy is the home of more American ex patriots than any other country. So you should be warned in advance that if you stay too long in Italy, you might never want to come back. With that in mind, proceed with caution.

Holiday Apartments in Bulgaria: What is Available For Rent and For How Much

Although the global economy is reeling from the crisis that started in the U.S. and spread throughout the world, there is at least one positive outcome that came out of it. Unlike 5 6 years ago when most tourists had to book hotel rooms, often through touroperators, now they can also choose from hundreds of private holiday apartments for rent. Bulgaria is one of the countries that experienced a tremendous boom in such construction in its beach and ski resorts. What rental properties are available and how much do they cost? A recent analysis shows the following information. The observations were drawn from a database compiled from the top three websites advertizing holiday rentals in Bulgaria.

1. There are close to 1000 holiday apartments for rent throughout Bulgaria. The number of apartments available for rent has not increased in the last several months after the collapse of property markets. However, there will probably be an increase in holiday rentals as individual investors try to recoup some of their investments over time.

2. Most the apartments are concentrated in three main resorts – Bansko which is a ski destination and Sunny Beach and St. Vlas that are on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Bansko and Sunny Beach combined account for about 60 percent of all holiday apartments available for rent. The construction boom in these three resorts was aided by the availability of land and the interest of U.K. and Irish investors. In fact, the construction boom made out of Bansko and St. Vlas much more important holiday destinations than anyone could imagine just a few years ago. This is especially true of St. Vlas that was a sleepy village until recently and is now a bustling resort.

3. The most widely available type of apartments is a one bedroom apartment. These usually are designed to accommodate 4 people – two in a standard bedroom and two more on a sleeper sofa in the living room. About 70 percent of the available apartments are one bedroom apartments. Most of the remaining 30 percent are studios. Therefore, the offers are mostly for a single family or for a couple. Larger families or groups can find fewer accommodations of this type, if they want to stay in one apartment.

4. One bedroom apartments in Sunny Beach rent out for about 300 euro in the high season. This is July and August. The low season from May to June and then September offer discounts of about 15 20 percent.

5. Rental prices are similar in St. Vlas and a bit cheaper in Varna and Nessebar, by a margin of about 20 percent.

6. There is substantial variation between the rental prices of what appear to be similar apartments in the same resort. For example, one bedroom apartments range from about 200 euro per week in St.Vlas to about 400 euro per week. This suggests that tourists should do a thorough search and will probably find a good deal.

7. Rental prices are higher in the ski destinations compared to the rental prices in the beach destinations, by about 15 percent. However, much of the difference comes from the very high prices on Christmas and New Year. The most expensive ski destination is Borovets, which is understandable given its close proximity to the capital Sofia.

Wonderful Queensland The Sunshine State

When a state is blessed with a warm, sunny climate, an abundance of beautiful scenery, and a coastline that is the envy of the world, it is hardly surprising that thousands come each year to visit. Indeed, many locals will tell you that Queensland, with its relaxed lifestyle and friendly atmosphere, is the best place in which to live, work, and retire.

This is a State full of extremes. In the far west the Simpson Desert, with its dunes and inhospitable gibber plains gives way to the Channel Country, an area laced with an intricate web of often dry streams that after heavy rain may spill to cover the land like a vast brown sea.

Eastern Queensland’s spine is the Great Dividing Range, a mighty barrier that separates the fertile coastal plain from the vast outback tracts extending to the State’s western border. Stretching from Cape York to the southern border and beyond, the Great Divide comprises a series of high mountains, tablelands, and low rolling hills. Here, rainforest gives way to eucalypt woodland, waterfalls fed by tropical rains tumble over rock faces and escarpments, and boulder studded streams flow through deep gorges.

The coastline is another world. Washed by the brilliant blue waters of the Coral Sea, long sandy beaches fringed with tropical vegetation edge the shores, broken only by rocky headlands and mangrove forests. Lying off shore is a multitude of islands and one of the world’s great natural wonders: the Great Barrier Reef.

The second largest State in Australia, Queensland covers an area of more than 1.7 million square kilometres in the north east corner of the continent. The northern marine boundary, passing within a few kilometres of Papua New Guinea’s coastline, includes the 200 odd islands lying off Cape York Peninsula in the Torres Strait; to the east, it includes all the islands within the Great Barrier Reef.

Until 1859, Queensland was part of New South Wales. The first European settlement, a penal colony, was established at Moreton Bay in 1824 and soon afterwards was moved to the present site of Brisbane — the State’s capital city. By 1839 nearly all the convicts had been returned to Sydney and the district was opened to free settlers.

The Brisbane settlement grew slowly at first; when the area was proclaimed the Colony of Queensland in 1859 the population was 23,520. Today, the State has a population exceeding 4 million — of which nearly half live in the Brisbane Ipswich urban area.

For the Aborigines — the original inhabitants of the land — many parts of Queensland are ritual grounds of sacred Dreamtime legends, and there are important traditional rock art sites, particularly on Cape York Peninsula in the north. It was in this area that a race of hunters and gatherers came to the Australian continent some 40,000 years ago, coming in across the Torres Strait when it was dry land during the last ice age.

Just over half of the State lies between the Tropic of Capricorn and 10 degrees south of the Equator. Inland, the summers are hot, but on the coastal plain the temperatures are milder — with far higher humidity. Winters are much drier and delightfully warm, though in the far south, nights can be quite cold with frost appearing on higher ground. Snow falls occasionally in the highlands near the border around Stanthorpe and Wallangarra.

The rainy season falls between December and March April, and it is during this time that the coast may be lashed by tropical cyclones. Rainfall varies enormously throughout the State, with the heaviest falls on the north eastern slopes and coast lands Tully averages 4550 mm annually and has the reputation of being the wettest town in Australia. Whereas Birdsville in the far west only averages an annual 150 mm and in drought it might not rain for years.

Agriculture is a major industry. Cattle and sheep graze on the grassy western plains, their drinking water supplied by a myriad bores that tap the vast store of underground water in the Great Artesian Basin. On the fertile tablelands of the Great Divide and the lush coastal plains farms grow a wide variety of produce from cotton to sugar cane, to peanuts, pineapples and a host of other tropical fruit and vegetables. The State is also rich in mineral deposits including bauxite, coal, oil, copper, silver, and gold. Indeed, the discovery of gold in the last century and the subsequent mining in the 1870s 80s did much to establish many of the coastal and inland centres throughout Queensland.

One of Queensland’s most important growth industries is tourism. Not only have overseas visitors discovered this favourable holiday destination, but Australians from other States now come in huge numbers. In winter, thousands flock to coastal caravan parks and holiday flats to exchange chilly southern days for delectably warm, sunny weather.

Apart from the lure of a warm climate, people return many times over to Queensland because there is just so much to do and see. Self drive holidays are probably the most popular, but for those who do not wish to drive, there is a vast number of conducted tours to choose from. Accommodation ranges from remote bush camps to five star luxury hotels with every type imaginable in between.

Interesting Manchester History

Greater Manchester is a landlocked county that is spread in 1,276 km² or 492.7 square miles. The hills rise along the eastern border of the county. West Pennine Moors along with many of coalfields, which are mostly sandstones and shale, are located in the west of the county.

Both the rivers called Tame and Mersey passes through the county borders, both of which rise slightly when these pass the hills. Other rivers that flow in the county are the Beal, the Douglas and the Irk, connecting the county with nature.

The peak of Black Chew Head is the highest in Greater Manchester and it stands at 1,778 feet or 542 m above sea level, it is located within the administrative control of Saddleworth. The largest area of prime farmland in Greater Manchester, Chat Moss at 10.6 square miles or 27 km2 and it contains the largest part of semi natural woodland in the county.
Most of the county is urban as it is a strong business district. Greater Manchester is also a polycentric county under whose control comes ten metropolitan districts,

Greater Manchester is no doubt the most complicated urban area in the UK except London and this is shown in the density and flow of its transport system. The amount it required for investments are in order to meet the progressing and different movements demand generated by its development fashion.

Greater Manchester has an average maritime weather, like most of the British Isles, with cool summers and mild winters. The county’s annual average rainfall is slightly less when compared to the UK average of 1,125.0 millimeters or 44.29 in and its mean rain days are also less than UK. The temperature is a little bit high than the average of the UK.

Humidity level is high in Greater Manchester, which has prepared itself to the most of and a break free textile manufacturing units that work all over the county. Snowfall is not a usual sight in the developed areas, because of the urban warming reasons. Where as, the Pennine and Rossendale Forest hills that surround the eastern and northern borders of the county get more snow and roads that lead out of the county have to be closed when heavy snowfall occurs, especially the A62 road that runs via Standedge, the A57 or also called Snake Pass that goes towards Sheffield and the M62 that goes over Saddleworth Moor.

Most of Greater Manchester’s houses consist of terraced houses that were constructed as low cost houses, mostly for the population of local factory town workers. This street has been renovated in Salford due to Urban Splash.

Greater Manchester has the third most populous county in the UK after Greater London and the West Midlands. It comes seventh if density of population is calculated in England.

Greater Manchester has a diverse population and is a multicultural in form. After the industrialization of Greater Manchester was on decline in the mid 20th century, there was a huge economic and population decline in this area, especially in Manchester and Salford.

Big areas that had low quality and morally degraded terraced housing that was built in the Victorian period were found in a neglected and poor state of repair and were not ready for modern requirements. Many interior districts had to suffer from high levels of unemployment and chronic social deprivation.

Almeria, The Mirror of the Sea

If you want to enjoy a mixture of city and beach, there are few better choices than Almeria. Located in the heart of Andalucía on the coast, it boasts the hottest and driest climate in Spain, and from the cultural highlights of the city to the long stretch of beach located nearby, it has plenty to offer its visitors. I’ve shuttled plenty of people from the airport to Almeria and back again, and I’ve rarely heard a bad word said against the city! I’ve also been told about and explored myself some of the highlights of the city – here are a few that you shouldn’t miss out on next time you are in Almeria.

The Sights of the City and Surrounding Areas

The most striking highlight of Almeria is the Alcazaba, a spectacular clifftop Moorish fortress that overlooks the city, and is the second largest. The fortress is a relic of Almeria’s Moorish heritage, as is the name of the city; in Arabic, it means “Mirror”, as in “Mirror of the Sea.”

But Almeria is no one hit wonder. The towering Catholic Cathedral, dating from the 16th century, is an unmissable highlight. The old town, with its traditional market and winding streets is always a big hit with visitors, and its version of La Rambla may not be as grand or as famous as Barcelona, but it is a great place to stroll along and while away a sunny afternoon.

I’d also recommend paying a visit to the gypsy quarter, its unique cave dwellings are really a strange sight to behold, and you can get further information on the mixed history of Almeria at the archaeological museum. The city has quite a story to tell – it was established as a Moorish fortress city, and in its time has been conquered by the Christians, raided by Berber pirates, and shelled by the Germans in the Spanish Civil War!

The scenic town of Mojacar, situated near Almeria, is definitely worth a visit. Mojacar has a long history stretching over 4000 years and has been populated by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks and Moors. It was under Moor rule that it really began to flourish, an imposing castle was built and the town walls were expanded and fortified. However, a Muslim town in the midst of a Christian country is suffered many brutal incursions and I’m always keen to regale my tourists with stories of these during the journey from airport to Almeria.

Mojacar is now home to more than 17km of sandy beaches and notable sights include La Iglesia de Santa Maria, a 14th Century fortress and The Old Customs House where visitors were taxed during the 18th Century for the pleasure of visiting the town. I’d make a tidy profit during my Almeria airport transfers if this procedure were still enforced today.

Beautiful Cuisine

I am often asked to drive to the scenic town of Roquetas when conducting my Almeria airport transfers and it’s so hard not to stop the car and run into one of the town’s delicious seafood restaurants. Visitors often ask to me to recommend them a local dish, and without fail, I always suggest the regions speciality of lobster and rice. The town is known for both its gastronomy and antiquated fishing traditions so it seems particularly fitting to recommend a seafood dish.

Soak Up the Sun

Whenever I drive people from the airport to Almeria city, I’m always sure to mention that the main beach in the city is almost entirely nudist. For some people this will be an added attraction for Almeria – for others, it’ll be an embarrassing place they’d rather avoid! It’s a gorgeous beach (with plenty of gorgeous people on it!) but if you’d prefer to sunbathe in more conservative fashion, a visit to one of the nearby resorts (see nearby attractions) will be ideal.

However, if you don’t mind the idea of baring all then the resort of Vera Playa will definitely appeal to you. Vera Playa is known as the world’s best naturist resort and it houses over 2,000 naturist apartments and even a four star naturist hotel. Even the streets of Vera Playa are no clothes zones, which can take some getting used too!

Nearby Attractions

There’s plenty to keep you occupied in Almeria itself, but there’s plenty in the local area if you’d like to explore further afield. The Andalucían coastline is teeming with outstanding resorts, with Aguadulce, Almerimar to the west and Mojacar to the east. All of them are excellent options if you’d like to visit a traditional beach resort town; many of my Almeria airport transfer passengers choose to combine a few days in the city itself with a break on one of the coastal resorts. And if cities are more your thing, vibrant and diverse Granada is just a few hours away – ask me nicely, and I might just give you a discount when I drive you there!

The town of Chambéry

From this town, visitors could have an amazing view of the Alps which is said to be unique due to the way in which the sight is clear towards almost every point a person might wish to look.

At the north area of Chambéry there is the main natural lake of France, the Lac du Bourget, famous due to its beauty and charm. Besides its lake and landscapes, Chambéry also offers visitors the chance to explore amazing buildings as well as relax at a local café or a restaurant.

Those visitors who enjoy sports would also be able to find something fun to do while being in Chambéry due to the fact that this town offers the chance to practice several different sports. Among the different sports available within the area of Chambéry there is, for example, skiing, sailing, and rock climbing among others.

Due to the fact that Chambéry is not a very big town and it is full of peculiar spots to meet, it is recommended to walk in order to explore it or rent a bicycle instead of translating from one point to another by car. This way, by walking around the city, visitors would be able to pay attention to any detail they might find attractive and explore the town as precisely as they might wish.

The Chambéry street called Rue Basse du Chateau is one of the most unique and charming spots within the town and it is highly recommended that visitors take their time to explore it in detail, although in 2001 a fire destroyed an important part of it. Another interesting place to visit in Chambéry is the Chateau of Chambéry, which was the main residence of the Ducs de Savoie and offers a very appealing architectural structure to observe.

There also are several other interesting places to visit within the town of Chambéry. Among these spots there is the Cathedral de Chambéry, the Place du Palais de Justice, the Place St. Leger, the Croix du Nivolet, the Elephants Fountain, the local MuseumFind Article, and Mont Garnier among others.

German Shepherd A Combination Of Action And Elegance

German Shepherd: A Combination Of Action And Elegance
By: Jan A Ryan

It was Max von Stephanitz who gripped all the essential credits for the development of the highly talented, faithful and obedient German Shepherd. He solely conceptualized a great variety of sheep herding dogs into one single variety. He visualized a dog of righteous character, great working ability, loyal and comprehensively trainable. Shepherd dogs were known as the best working dogs in 18th and 19th centuries. The shepherds in Germany employed their dogs to direct their group of sheep as well as cattle. The first priority was given on their working ability, not on their appearance. The root of these dogs in historical timeline has not yet been identified.

In the late 19th century, a movement for initiating the herding sheep method was inspired by Captain von Stephanitz. The movement also influenced his decision to establish his organization Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde where both talent and beauty were prioritized. Although von Stephanitz also put his primary emphasis on the working ability of the German Shepherd, the attempt of increasing good appearance was also found to be important.

In the historical timeline, the evolvement of German Shepherd was not always that smooth. In fact, there was a time when there was a reduction in the demand of the shepherd dogs. During that phase, the great innovator Captain von Stephanitz shaped his idea of breeding the German Shepherd in absolutely a new direction as police service dogs, where these dog were increasingly trained as police dogs in order to serve the nation. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, an increasing number of dog shows actually started influencing the breeders to take both appearance and efficiency into account.

During 1899, the idea of the contemporary German Shepherd came into existence with the continuous contribution of von Stephanitz and the formation of Verein. England discovered German Shepherds in World War I and took it back to the U.K. under the name of Alsatian. Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde regulated all the breeding in Germany during that phase. However, Germany was devastated and ruined following World War II, and the same was true with the breeding organization and policies. During that period, the credit of breeding the best German Shepherds went to North America.

However, in the late 19th century, von Stephanitz tried to find out new arenas of breeding German Shepherd dogs with the help of his extensive experience and application of knowledge. He kept his faith about many ideas used in England by that time. During 1899, von Stephanitz participated in a dog show, where he bought Horand von Grafrath. This is the time when Verein was founded and it was Horand who took his entry in the studbook as the first registered German Shepherd. Captain von Stephanitz was most impressed by the qualities of Horand.

Horand was a medium size dog with a blend of liveliness and activity. An obedient, brave, defensive and energetic type of dog was mostly adored for its mental alertness. Additionally, it had beautiful lines all over the body. These were the qualities that made the German Shepherd acquire such a universal acceptance. In modern days, German imports of German Shepherds are highly desirable to everyone for their incredible sense of smell, extraordinary obedience, sound temperament, and excellent physical structure and working efficiency.

Cycling The German Team Gerolsteiner Retires From The Cycling Sector

Another well-known German cycling team announced its retirement from the cycling sector. The Team Gerolsteiner is the third team that within one year retires after T-Mobile and the only in 2006 promoted Team Wiesenhof-Felt. The teams sponsor T-Mobile which was managed by the US American Bob Stapleton announced the end of his engagement already in November 2007 after a range of doping cases. Fortunately for the cyclists the team was not totally dissolved but now participate under the name Team Colombia. The renamed team is now sponsored by the UA American Columbia Sportswear Company that manufactures and distributes outerwear and sportswear. The Team Columbia is headquartered in the Californian San Luis Obispo. Columbia Sportswear began sponsoring the team in July 2008 with the first race of the Tour de France. The sponsoring contract is made for preliminary three years. Manager of the team will remain the US American Bob Stapleton. There are still eight German cyclists starting for the now American team, among others the currently best German cyclist of the team Andre Greipel who won the tenth Tour Down Under this year. This tour is a race beyond Europe but counts towards the UCI ProTour. Unfortunately the Team Gerolsteiner didnt have that much luck finding another sponsor. Hans-Michael Holczer is team chef since the foundation in 1998. He is searching in vain for a successor of the mineral water company Gerolsteiner. For this reason unfortunately he had to announce the fold of the team at the end of this year. The 54-year-old Holczer is as well manager of a cycle shop and still has a little bit of hope. At a press statement he advertised that if anybody should ever have the intention to be a main sponsor of a big professional cycle team they could come to him and he would be more than glad to offer his advice and help for the realization. Some of the cyclist of the team already got in touch with new teams. Gerolsteiner's top riders are amongst others Bernhard Kohl from Austria and Stefan Schumacher from Germany who won the fourth stage of this years Tour de France and could take over the Yellow Jersey of the overall leader. As first and so far sole German cyclist was Jan Ullrich able to achieve the overall victory at the Tour de France in 1997. Now we are standing again at the beginning of the German cycling section just as 1991 when the first German cycling team was founded with the Team Telekom which now is known under the name Team Columbia. The professional cycling team Milram exists since the beginning of 2006 and is sponsored by the Nordic milk concern Milram Corporation. The 38-year-old German cyclist Erik Zabel is currently the captain of the team. Apparently three cyclists (Johannes Frhlinger, Matthias Ru and Fabian Wegmann) already signed a new contract with the Team Milram and it seems like sports director Christian Henn will switch to the Milkmen as well. Next to Linus Gerdemann, Gerald Ciolek, the brothers Markus und Thomas Fothen the Milram team chef van Gerwen might also be interested in Stefan Schumacher. The young team wants to take the chance and make a fresh start with the best German cyclist to bring back glamour, interest and a good reputation to the German cycling section. Van Gerwen said: This will be a team which my heart will be clung to.
